Last week I had the good fortune to speak at The Lincoln Forum
at Gettysburg. The Lincoln Forum has become a central Lincoln
conference every year. The 14th annual Forum featured presentations by
some of the leading Lincoln authors who published books in 2009. Jim
McPherson, Richard Carwardine, Catherine Clinton, Vernon Burton and
Fred Kaplan were some of the speakers at this year's Forum attended by
nearly three hundred persons from all across the United States. I
spoke on Abraham Lincoln 2009: Wisdom for Today on
November 17. At the Gettysburg National Cemetery, Actor Richard
Dreyfuss recited the Gettysburg Address on November 19 -- the 146th
anniversary of Lincoln's speech commemorating the battle. It was a
delight to have the chance to participate in the The Lincoln Forum and
it was a real capstone to what has been a remarkable Lincoln
Bicentennial year!
- Ronald C. White, Jr. is the author of A. Lincoln: A Biography, a New York Times, Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times bestseller. White is also the author of Lincoln's Greatest Speech: The Second Inaugural (2002), honored as a New York Times Notable Book of 2002, and a Washington Post and San Francisco Chronicle bestseller, and The Eloquent President: A Portrait of Lincoln Through His Words (2005), a Los Angeles Times bestseller and a selection of the History Book Club and the Book-of-the-Month Club. He has lectured at the White House and been interviewed on the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. Dr. White is a graduate of UCLA, Princeton Theological Seminary, and earned his Ph.D. in Religion and History from Princeton University. He has taught at UCLA, Princeton Theological Seminary, Whitworth University, Colorado College, and San Francisco Theological Seminary where he served as Dean and Professor of American Religious History. He is presently a Fellow at the Huntington Library and a Visiting Professor of History at UCLA. He lives with his wife, Cynthia, in La Cañada, California.
